My Review: 4/5 Stars
It’s been clear since Annika arrived at REU that she is smitten with Creighton. Creighton who has shown zero interest back. Though, Creigh is pretty much the definition of silence and brooding. The man rarely has anything to say. And Annika makes it her mission to talk to him and get something. Little does she know that bit by bit she is getting through to Creigh in a way that even surprises him. Annika is a princess of the Mafia. She is treated as such in a way that goes as far as being locked in a tower begging for freedom. Coming to REU helped gain her some freedom, but she isn’t completely free since her brother is at the school next door. And she isn’t in denial that when the time comes she may have to marry someone she doesn’t pick because it will be what is expected. But when she is given a bit of hope that maybe she won’t be forced to do so, she comes up with a plan. A fake boyfriend. Let that stall her as much time as possible and prove that her mom is right and her dad won’t force her hand. She knows Creigh will never play that role for her. So why is acting so different when he hears her plan? A plan that gets rips to shreds the moment, he claims her as his? Creigh doesn’t understand how Annika snuck his way into his darkness, but the moment she doesn’t back down from him and ignores his warnings, well, there’s no going back. But as they explore this connection between them, Creigh is also searching for answers on his birth parents. And while he may remember the horrors before his adopted parents saved him, he still needs answers. And unfortunately for him those answers may be closer than he knows. The deeper I go into this series, the more I’m hooked! Just when I think I know where the story will go, it pivots. And man, did we have some unexpected twists here. Creigh and Annika surprised me and definitely kept me on my toes. We still get that dark romance but in a way that was similar yet very different from the previous book. And we continue to get to know other characters in their group that make me extra excited to see their story! Can’t wait to start book 3!
