Breakaway Goals by Beth Bolden

Tampa Sentinels Captain Hayes Montgomery has hero-worshipped Morgan Reynolds his entire career, watching as the larger-than-life hockey star has racked up stats that always seemed unreal. Unattainable. Unreachable.

Until Hayes himself is labeled “the next one” and to his surprise, he and Morgan end up on the same team together, playing for Team USA in a nation versus nation tournament.

Now Hayes’ hero isn’t just his teammate, but his linemate. They’re hot on the ice, and despite Morgan’s straight reputation, off it too.

It’s only ten days, but it’s the best ten days of his life. That shouldn’t be long enough for a hockey crush to morph into a real crush, but Hayes falls head over heels, fling-himself-off-a-cliff, wildly in love with Morgan, anyway.

They don’t play on the same team or even on the same coast. Normally, they’re never in the same zip code, but that doesn’t change Hayes’ feelings—or his regret when the fling ends.

Fast forward six years. Morgan’s retired, Hayes is writing his own name in the record books, and he’s sure he’s over it. Over him.

But then Morgan arrives in Tampa to watch his rookie son play for the Sentinels.

He doesn’t want to be hung up on his teammate’s dad, but it doesn’t matter how long it’s been or what he’s tried. Morgan still makes Hayes’ knees weak.

And when it turns out Morgan has his own Hayes’ shaped regret?

Maybe they can finally find their way back to each other again.

Breakaway Goals is a MM hockey standalone romance, but spins off from Beth's Portland Evergreens series.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

I’ve been so excited to read Morgan and Hayes’s story and it did not disappoint! These two finally get their happy ending after years of waiting. Six years ago, Morgan and Hayes got to play together on Team USA for a nations tournament. Hayes has always looked up to Morgan and playing with his hero was beyond real. Though he also is reluctant to admit about the massive crush he has on Morgan as well. And when Morgan shows interest? Hayes could never have predicted how hard he would fall. Morgan was not prepared for what Hayes would do to him. Never has he felt this way about someone before, the fact that Hayes is a guy doesn’t even phase him. They have a week together if that to explore this thing between them. But with the fear of playing on teams opposite the country and knowing their future is doomed, Morgan does the one thing that he will always regret, he left. Fast forward six years and these two are back in one another’s orbit. Morgan is retired and his son is about to play for Hayes’s team. And Morgan will have to face Hayes after years of failing to get over him. But does he truly have to? Can he win Hayes back? As for Hayes, he tried to move on but never could. He is still angry at how Morgan treated him these last few years and even more mad that his feelings have never gone away. But when he sees Morgan, he can’t help but notice how much he has changed. And it’s only a matter of time until he gives in to the pull between them. I loved this story! These two, ugh, my heart. You just want to shake them for wasting so much time and tell them to communicate. Sure, maybe their timing was bad, but they could have left off better! But at least they have a second chance and it is just so sweet. Really adored them and watching them find their way back to one another. The two of them deserved to find their happy ending!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
