Consumed by J.R. Ward

Consumed (Firefighters, #1)

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the popular Black Dagger Brotherhood series comes a brand-new novel about arson investigator, Anne Ashburn, who is consumed by her troubled past, her family’s scorched legacy, and her current case: chasing a deadly killer.

Anne Ashburn is a woman consumed...

By her bitter family legacy, by her scorched career as a firefighter, by her obsession with department bad-boy Danny McGuire, and by a new case that pits her against a fiery killer.

Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse fire changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self.

Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn't believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again--until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze.

Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, best in the county, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. But Danny may be more than a distraction, and as Anne narrows in on her target, the arsonist begins to target her.

From the creator of the bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood, get ready for a new band of brothers. And a firestorm.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

I was so not prepared for how good this book was!! The beginning alone was absolutely insane. Those first few chapters immediately threw you into the action and the traumatic events that will change the lives of both Anne and Danny. There is no sugar coating what they go through. It was raw and rough and seriously scary. Ward does a great job of showing how something so life changing can happen on a job that is about saving lives and the aftermath. What I love about Ward's writing is that she really knows how to write characters. She doesn't hold back and let's you know all the details, good and bad, that make these characters who they are. And if the awesome characters and their stories weren't enough, the other plot and conflict that Anne and Danny face is even more intriguing. A bit of a mystery and thriller is going on, as Anne tries to find her path at her new job. And what she stumbles upon is bigger than she expected. Trying to figure out the mystery behind the fires, had me turning the pages faster, demanding to know what happened. And let me tell you, there is a huge plot twist at the end, that I had no idea was coming! It was really fantastic and not at all predictable. I really enjoyed this story. I have only ever read Ward's paranormal stories and I was not disappointed in her contemporary work. If you are already a fan of her, this story will not let you down!
