The Last Hours Book 1: Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

Chain of Gold (The Last Hours, #1)
The Last Hours Book 1
Chain of Gold is the first novel in a new trilogy that stars the Shadowhunters of Edwardian London.

Welcome to Edwardian London, a time of electric lights and long shadows, the celebration of artistic beauty and the wild pursuit of pleasure, with demons waiting in the dark. For years there has been peace in the Shadowhunter world. James and Lucie Herondale, children of the famous Will and Tessa, have grown up in an idyll with their loving friends and family, listening to stories of good defeating evil and love conquering all. But everything changes when the Blackthorn and Carstairs families come to London…and so does a remorseless and inescapable plague.

James Herondale longs for a great love, and thinks he has found it in the beautiful, mysterious Grace Blackthorn. Cordelia Carstairs is desperate to become a hero, save her family from ruin, and keep her secret love for James hidden. When disaster strikes the Shadowhunters, James, Cordelia and their friends are plunged into a wild adventure which will reveal dark and incredible powers, and the true cruel price of being a hero…and falling in love.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

All I can say is finally! Feels like I have been waiting forever for this book. But then again it always feels like that with Cassandra Clare's books. The Shadowhunter world is big and every book is just so good. These books both bring equal amount of pain and joy. Joy because the stories are fantastic. The characters, the world, just literally everything. But pain because you know the book will cut you emotionally and that there will be cliffhangers and moments where you want your characters to see what you see but you know they cannot and that they won't discover the truth until a later time. And the fact that you want them to be happy but one is rarely happy by the end of the first book. Not with the promise of more to follow. I always find myself wanting to skip and find their happily ever afters.

I loved Chain of Gold. It brought me back to a time of some of my favorite characters and introduced us to ones that we only heard briefly about because so many books take place way after their time. It was great to meet James, Cordelia, Lucie, and so many others. They face a new threat this time around. A new threat of demons that bring a lot more complications. Death and destruction is all they leave in their wake and it is up to this next generation of Shadowhunters to stop them. So many twists and turns and revelations. And as we know with these books you are never just following one person. Each character is going through something and you want to follow every single one in these moments to see what will happen. I cannot say much without spoilers and let me tell you this is one book not to be spoiled. I cannot wait for the next one!!!
