Vino & Veritas Book 5: Aftermath by L.A. Witt

Aftermath (Vino and Veritas, #5)
Vino & Veritas Book 5

Brent Weyland was the life of the party until an injury ended his hockey career. Now he’s retreated alone to a lakefront house, trying to make sense of a life and body that don’t feel like his anymore.

Jon Norquist was happily married right up until he wasn’t. Now a single father in his forties, he’s trying to figure out what comes next. In the meantime, he pours his heartache and regret into the lyrics he sings for the wine bar crowd a couple of nights a week.

When a friend coaxes Brent out for a night of wine and music, he puts Brent and Jon on a collision course. Their chemistry is instantaneous. Jon gives Brent’s battered body a much-needed remedial lesson in pleasure. And Brent gives Jon a reason to smile again.

Multiple reasons, actually. Neither man wants anything serious, but love has a habit of showing up whether it’s welcome or not. No matter how hard they try, the two can’t help having feelings for each other, even as life continues to throw them curveballs.

But they’ve both got baggage to unpack and hurt to move past, and if they can’t leave their pasts in the past, they might just miss out on an amazing future.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Brent and Jon have had a tough year. After a car crash ends Brent's hockey career he is living his life one day at a time as he deals with the pain that just won't go away. From the years of hockey injuries to a car crash that nearly killed him and resulted in my surgeries, his body doesn't feel like his own. Pain every single day and with his father in his ear telling him that he is a quitter and if he tried harder he could be back on the ice, Brent is just exhausted. He knows his hockey career is over and all he wants is to not be in physical and mental pain every day. Jon's been divorced for a year and a half now after being married for twenty years. He copes with his heartache by singing on stage at Vino & Veritas and taking care of his ten year old son when it's his week. When Brent and Jon meet there is instant chemistry but Brent's pain is enough for him to back away when he realizes that maybe he isn't ready for any sort of physical relationship. But he can't stay away from Jon and the feeling is mutual. Instead, they decide to start a sort of friends with benefits situation. Keeping and enjoying one another's company but never truly labeling that they indeed entered a relationship. Especially when they form a friendship and feelings run deep. Their story was so good. Both have been through so much and you get to see them struggle and overcome their insecurities and cards the life dealt them. You can't help loving both of these characters and hoping they could overcome their struggles enough to realize that what they have is real and that they would be great together. Another great addition to this series!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
