Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Ready Player One (Ready Player One, #1)

In the year 2045, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. When Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

My Review: 4/5 Stars

After watching the movie and loving the story, I had to of course read the book. This was probably the rare time I would say that I liked watching the movie before and reading the book. And what I learned was that the book and the movie are both completely different. The movie pulled some things from the book, but the journey to the egg and the riddles to the keys were completely different. I could probably count on one hand the similarities between the two. People who probably read the book first then watched the movie, were probably upset with the movie and I get that, but I think because I watched the movie first, I liked it a bit better. But that is not to say the book wasn't good! It totally was! And with that said, if you watched the movie before reading this, do NOT compare the two and have high expectations of it being the same. It really was not. And it was probably a good thing because the book had a lot to offer.

So I will admit that the beginning of the book is a bit slow. There is a lot of background information Wade gives about the OASIS, Halliday, and so on. So it took me a bit to truly get into it. I was waiting for him to finally solve the first key in the hopes it would pick up. And after a good chunk of the book it did finally pick up and it was really a fantastic read. Wade is one of the many who are part of the search for Halliday's Easter Egg. The contest truly sets off when Wade, after five years of the contest beginning, finally cracks the first clue and receives the first key. From there, the other gunters begin the chase along with the villains of the story IOI. The books consists of riddles and challenges as Wade and his friends try to win the contest before IOI can. Because once IOI gets hold of the OASIS, things in the real world will only be worse.

Great characters, stories, and with fun video games and movie references, this book was a lot of fun to read!
