My Review: 5/5 Stars
"From #1 New York Times–bestselling author Kami Garcia comes a red-hot romance that will break your heart and put it back together again." They say that and they aren't wrong. I read this book in one sitting. I just couldn't put it down. Broken Beautiful Hearts... yeah that's exactly how I feel. The story is beautifully written, tugging on your heart strings the entire time until your heart feels like it's breaking and repairing itself over and over. (Clearly the title isn't wrong.) The characters are real, the issues are real. And though the story itself is fiction, Kami Garcia gives these real issues a voice.
Soccer star Peyton discovers that her boyfriend has been keeping a secret. The secret is dangerous and when she confronts him, the argument turns dangerous. Pushed down the stairs, Peyton finds her dream to play Division 1 soccer in jeopardy when her knee is damaged. And if that isn't bad enough, her best friend, who happens to me her now ex-boyfriend's sister, doesn't believe that her brother would ever hurt Peyton. And she isn't the only one who doesn't believe her. What I loved about Peyton is that she didn't cave to the pressure of her friends and take back what she said. She knows what happened and she refused to let anyone tell her otherwise. She's a strong character who isn't afraid to stick up for herself or others, no matter the situation. Soon after, Peyton's ex is calling and stalking her to talk to him. Peyton's mother decides to send Peyton to her Uncle's in Tennessee to get her away and help her focus on healing her knee.
With Peyton closed off and ready to focus on fixing her knee, Peyton is unprepared for Owen. Their connection is instant the chemistry off the charts. Owen is everything she should avoid but her heart doesn't seem to get the message. And Owen isn't going to give Peyton up without a fight. However, Owen has his own secrets. Their relationship is on a slippery edge and if neither of them are careful they both may fall. The romance between Peyton and Owen had you swooning and cheering for them the whole way through.
The story was fantastic and the characters were great. And what was also fantastic about the book is that Garcia really focused on issues that ranged from bullying to violence and how when friends stick by one another and you have the courage to speak up, it can really make a difference. Whether if it is for yourself or a friend.
