Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry

Shield of Sparrows is a slow-burn, high-stakes romantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros―where enemies become lovers, monsters stalk a cursed realm, and a forgotten princess finds the strength to tear off her crown and become the warrior she was never meant to be.

The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.

I’ve spent my life kneeling―to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.

I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.

But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father’s throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.

Now I’m crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him―bound to a future I didn’t choose and a husband I barely know.

Everyone wants me to be something I’m not―a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.

But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there’s power in being underestimated?

And what if―for the first time―I reached for it?

My Review: 5/5 Stars

This book was so good! The amount of times it was recommended to me, I finally picked it up. And it was such a great story! And I can’t wait for book two. The story follows Odessa. A princess who is used to feeling invisible to her family. Even though she is the oldest, she is cast aside for her half sister at every turn. Odessa has basically accepted the fact that there is nothing special about her and no matter how hard she tries, nothing is good enough. So she’ll stay in the background. Quiet and surviving. But everything changes the day a prince and his monster hunter arrive at their castle. It is time to move forward with the magical treaty that basically renews the union and protects the kingdoms from fighting one another. But instead of Odessa’s sister being the princess to marry the prince, it is demanded that Odessa fill the role. A role she was never prepared to fill. Everything changes for Odessa as she travels to this kingdom with an impossible task from her father and no one to truly lean on. And don’t get her started on her feelings toward the Guardian. He drives her insane yet at the same time, she finds herself being drawn to him way more than the prince. With a world filled of monsters and secrets, Odessa will have to adapt to survive. I really loved this story! A sweet slow burn between her and the Guardian. With so many twists and turns. While I called a few things, there were definitely some surprises I didn’t see coming. This world is so interesting and we have such a great cast of characters. And that ending! Well, I definitely will be needing book two asap! For all the romantasy fans, you don’t want to pass on this one!
