Shifters Unbound Book 13: The Last Warrior by Jennifer Ashley

The Last Warrior
Shifters Unbound Book 13

Ben, the last of a warrior race destroyed by the Fae, has lived a thousand years in exile and now has found a place among the Shifters. He’s the caretaker of a sentient house outside New Orleans, and the Shifters turn to him when they’re in dire trouble. Even so, Ben is aware of his aloneness, his people gone forever.

Rhianne, daughter of the powerful Lady Aisling, is in a jam. She’s pursued by an ambitious and ruthless Fae lord--marriage to her will help him become emperor. Rhianne sees only one escape, to flee her home for the world of humans and Shifters.

But for that, she’ll need a guide and a protector.

Ben just happens to be handy, using his skills to help other enemies of the Fae. Lady Aisling asks him for the favor of his life—to take Rhianne to a Shiftertown and look out for her, even if it means putting him in the most danger he’s faced since his final battle with the Fae.

Rhianne is reluctant to trust her fate to the unknown Ben, but she soon finds the human world, the Shifters, and most of all Ben, have captured her fascination, and possibly her heart.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Ben finally gets a book! Ben is such a beloved character in this series. I feel like he makes an appearance in almost every book and yet he hasn't had his own happily ever after. He helps everyone he cans and watches his friends find their mates, but never him. And has hit points where he thinks it is just not in the cards for him. Especially that he is the last of kind and was exiled so long ago. But now that finally changes. When Lady Aisling recruits him to save her daughter and protect her from an evil Fae, Ben doesn't hesitate to help. What he never saw coming was the connection he would have with Rhianne. A connection that frightens him because everything he loves tends to disappear and he is used to never being chosen. Rhianne doesn't understand why her father is suddenly determined to capture her. He sent a Fae to kidnap and marry her but luckily Ben came to her rescue. And now she finds herself in the human world with Shifters and places she has never seen before. But with Ben at her side, the world isn't so scary. That is until an unexpected change begins inside her and her magic. And her father is coming for her. It will take more than just her and Ben to stop him. I loved this story. It had so many great elements to it. First off, lots of plot twists. There were so many great surprises that came with this one, changing what we know about the world so far. It also involved a lot of characters we love coming together when Ben needed them for once. I love seeing so many great characters come together. Then of course Ben and Rhianne. Ben is a favorite character and it was nice to see him find his mate. And Rhianne was a great surprise. A badass in her own right and a great match for Ben. Love this series and I cannot wait for more!

Bellamy Creek Book 3: Call Me Crazy by Melanie Harlow

Call Me Crazy (Bellamy Creek, #3)
Bellamy Creek Book 3

It was the perfect plan.
I needed a wife—temporarily—in order to inherit the family business.
And she needed a favor—the kind that takes nine months to deliver.

We had it all worked out, from the no-touching policy on our wedding night (her rule) to the no-falling-in-love decree (mine). She’d marry me, I’d give her the means to have the baby she’d always wanted, and one year later we’d amicably part ways with no hassle, no demands, and certainly no regrets.

After all, Bianca DeRossi and I are experts at infuriating one another—we’ve been doing it since we were kids. Trouble is, she grew up gorgeous and feisty, and she still knows exactly how to get under my skin.

And that wedding night? Well, it doesn’t exactly go down hands-free.

Then she moves in with me, and I really start to lose my mind. From her sexy little pout to her wicked sense of humor to those meatball sandwiches she makes just because she knows they’re my favorite . . . I find myself wanting to break every rule we put in place.

Our story was never supposed to end with happily ever after.
But call me crazy, I just might be in love with my wife.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Enzo and Bianca's story was exactly what I expected and more. Their deal and contract was doomed the moment the two conceived the idea. Enzo wanted his dad to officially give him the family business and to do that he needed to get married. Something Enzo did not want and especially didn't want if he was being forced to do it. Bianca wants a baby and knows time is running out for her and she is done waiting for the right man to come along. Let alone one that won't break her hurt. A deal between frenemies that believe they can get what they want and then divorce as friends. But their plan goes out the window rather quickly. Their chemistry is off the charts in every that matters. First off, the two of them are absolutely hilarious. I couldn't wait to see what they would fight about next and they are genuinely just funny characters. The better twist to this story wasn't that it wasn't so typical. They weren't arguing or even truly enemies. Their deal made them establish a real friendship between them and they realizes that they actually enjoyed one another's company. But things get difficult as Bianca tries to get pregnant. Sometimes things take time or can't happen. And this tests Enzo and Bianca to the max. Will they realize that though they said "no feelings," the truth is that they actually do? And will they actually take that leap of faith? Can they move past the possibility of starting a family may not be in the cards for them? Overall, I loved this book and loved seeing some favorite characters. And reading Enzo and Bianca get their happily ever after. Plus! Looks like the next book in the series is set up nicely in this book, so I definitely can't wait to see what happens next!

Vino & Veritas Book 3: Headstrong by Eden Finley

Headstrong (Vino and Veritas, #3)
Vino & Veritas Book 3

A straight guy gives gay hookup tips to a virgin. What could go wrong?

When I first met Whit, I couldn’t get away from him fast enough. He’s a hockey player, and I hate everything to do with the sport that once broke my heart.

But I can’t help feeling sorry for the guy. He’s newly out and desperate to meet someone, but his eagerness seems to scare potential hook-ups away.

Agreeing to be his wingman should’ve been simple. Watching him flirt with other guys made things complicated.

Whit challenges me in every aspect of my life, from my hatred of hockey to the new questions I’m asking myself. Like why a straight man suddenly can’t stop thinking about kissing another guy.

I think the answer lies somewhere on Whit’s lips...

My Review: 5/5 Stars

There was so much to love about this book. The humor alone was the best. So this book follows Whit and Rainn. Whit is recently out of the closet and is determined to explore his sexuality. The only problem is he is basically a terrible flirt who can't stop talking and ends up scaring any potential hook ups away. Lucky for him his new friend Rainn, the bartender at Vino & Veritas, decides to help him out. Sure, he's straight but watching Whit clumsily navigate his way to meet someone has Rainn deciding maybe he can help him out. What Rainn doesn't expect is for the genuine friendship to spark between them...or the sudden attraction he feels for Whit. And even though Whit has Rainn's help to meet someone new, he immediately realizes that he can't meet anyone when he is currently crushing on his wingman. Their story was a hoot. Whit is an absolute dork and a delight and genuinely funny. And Rainn is this grouchy guy who finds himself charmed by Whit and realizing that he could actually be falling for Whit the more time they spend together. The story has a lot to offer. Like Whit trying to find someone he can be himself with and balance his hockey life at Moo U and his work life at the farm with his family. Meanwhile, Rainn used to play hockey at Moo U and planned on going pro until he injured his knee. His heart was broken after losing his future and he falls into this hole of being alone and becomes a bit of a pessimist. But meeting Whit changes things for him. He realizes he wasn't happy before and he struggles to figure out who he is and what he wants to do. Overall, loved this book. Like I said the humor was top notch, the characters were great, and the story as a whole had me turning page by page until I got to the end. I couldn't put it down. Loving this series so far and I can't wait for more!

Vino & Vertias Book 2: Heartscape by Garrett Leigh

Heartscape (Vino and Veritas, #2)
Vino & Vertias Book 2

From award-winning author Garrett Leigh comes a gorgeous new romance in the True North world! Think: great food, burly men and good times. Beards are optional but encouraged.

I’m not the obvious choice to run Burlington’s coolest wine bar—quiet, brooding, clueless about tannin content, and always one wrong turn away from another downward spiral.

But no one seems to mind that I'm a wreck. Besides me. I just focus on getting through each shift until the night a beautiful stranger appears, looking as lost and damaged as I feel.

When a mutual friend calls in a favor, the sexy newcomer winds up crashing on my couch. I don't know if it's his melodic Cornish accent, or his ocean blue eyes, or the rock-hard body with the mysterious scars, but I get the feeling whatever happened to him runs far deeper than those wounds.

Having Jax in my home makes my chest warm. Makes me shiver. Makes me want more. But I've got a pile of baggage and I don't want to be a burden on anyone let alone a man who seems to have enough demons of his own.

Our chemistry is off the charts. His arms feel like home. The last thing I want is to screw this up. Is it wrong to hope we can heal each other? Or will one of us die trying?

HEARTSCAPE is a heartfelt MM friends-to-lovers romance in the True North world, with a brooding bartender, a rugged outdoorsman, sweet angst and lots of Shipley cider. Triggers: contains mentions of depression, suicidal ideation and PTSD recovery.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Tanner needed a change. And he finds himself running the wine bar of Vino & Veritas. Despite the fact that when it comes to wine, he is totally clueless. But his previous job is a definite no. And with everything he has been through, Vino & Veritas is exactly what he needs. The structure, the organization of running the bar, and even the people (despite his grouchiness that says otherwise). He is surviving one day at a time after hitting a low point many months before after experiencing some traumatic things. What he doesn't see coming is Jax. A favor for a friends leads to Tanner offering Jax a place to crash. And though Tanner immediately acknowledges his attraction to Jax, he is very surprised by the fact that he doesn't mind Jax in his space. Doesn't mind seeing him and talking to every day. And for someone like him who avoids talking and feelings, it's pretty big. Jax hasn't had it easy either. He has his own past and traumas and ends up in Vermont where a close friend of him lives. His job as a videographer takes him hiking near Burlington and when the place he is staying has a fire, he ends up on Tanner's couch. He doesn't see Tanner coming either. Their steady friendship soon becomes something more. But can both heal their past hurts and take a chance on one another? Loved this book! Tanner and Jax were such great and complex characters. Both have been through a lot. And the friendship and eventual love between one another is so strong and complex and right. I loved their story and couldn't put it down!

My Review: 5/5 Stars

A perfect end to this series. There is no competition. Ian and Veritas's story was the best from the Night Huntress world. My favorite characters and this was such a satisfying ending to their story. The book picks up shortly after the last one ended. Veritas finds herself making a deal with Phanes, the deity she was betrothed to before her birth, in order to save Ian. But as he fulfills his end of the bargain and heals Ian and promises to help her rescue her father, she doesn't realize what she has agreed to. Or that he is more deceiving than she originally thought. Soon, Veritas and Ian find themselves in a war against three gods. And the only hope to win is to rally their friends and foes to come together. In order to save the world things need to change and it is time Ian and Veritas bring that change. Loved this book. I read it so fast. I couldn't put it down. We have the best team ups and visits from favorite characters in the entire series. It was great to have everyone come together once more for another fight of their lives. Ian and Veritas are ready to win this last fight and finally get some peace, safe and together. It was such a great end to their story and one that had everything we expected and wanted from them. I hope this isn't the end of the Night Huntress World. I would love more books from this universe. And even more adventures from Ian and Veritas. And of course other favorites from the series. Great, great book. And definitely my favorite series of this universe.

Vino & Veritas Book 1: Featherbed by Annabeth Albert

Featherbed (Vino and Veritas #1)
Vino & Veritas Book 1

When a bookworm on borrowed time meets a younger, free-spirited chicken farmer, sparks and feathers fly…

Harrison Phillip Fletcher III isn’t supposed to be here. Not in Burlington, Vermont, not running Vino & Veritas, a quaint inclusive bookstore and wine bar, and definitely not still alive at forty-two. Also not supposed to be here? An unexpected delivery of chickens.

Finn Barnes knows chickens. The burly organic farmer knows all about rare breed poultry, but dealing with a hot, older bookseller is an entirely different matter. City slicker types like Harrison never end up staying in Vermont for the long-term.

They should steer clear of each other. But the flare of attraction is mutual. And somehow, amid book discussions and farm tours, they discover plenty in common. Now they’re stealing kisses in Finn’s barn, sneaking out like teens, and burning up the sheets.

What starts as a fling brings very real feelings for two lonely souls, but a future together seems as unlikely as chickens in a bookstore. Feathers may be flying, but learning to trust takes time neither may have. Can they take a leap of faith together before it’s too late?

Featherbed is a stand-alone novel in Sarina Bowen’s True North world. This opposites attract, age gap romance features a low-angst, fluffy—and feathery—romp as a fish out of water discovers the home he never thought he’d find.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Featherbed kicks off another series in the World of True North: Vino & Veritas. When Harrison Fletcher moves to Vermont with his mother they decide to open Vino & Veritas, the bookstore and wine bar. What he doesn't expect as he gets his business started is for a a delivery of chickens to show up at the bookstore. A mixed up address leads Harrison to meet Finn Barnes, the farmer who Harrison can't help but notice and be attracted to. And lucky for Harrison, the feeling is mutual. But Harrison knows he is a bad bet when it comes to a relationship. First off, his father and grandfather both died at the age of 42...the same age Harrison currently is. He believes it is only a matter of time before something happens to him. Why would he risk a relationship when there is a part of him that can't help but worry and wonder if he might not be able to stick around? He rather protect those he loves than cause them more pain. As for Finn, the demand of running a farm usually has potential partners running from his way too busy schedule and life. No wonder seems to understand the work he does demands. Plus, the last city guy he fell for, left the second a new opportunity came around. He isn't ready to take another risk. This leads to a perfect set up for Harrison and Finn. A relationship with no expectations. Too bad, the more time they spend together, the more they realize that keeping emotions out of it is a no go. But can both of them move past their fears and take a chance on one another? Or will they let their fears keep them apart? I loved Harrison and Finn's story! Both were such great characters and complete opposites. But together, they were great for one another. This was a great way to kick off the series and I cannot wait for more!

A Court of Thorns and Roses Series Book 4: A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Silver Flames (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #4)
ACOTAR Book 4

Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can't seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.

The one person who ignites her temper more than any other is Cassian, the battle-scarred warrior whose position in Rhysand and Feyre's Night Court keeps him constantly in Nesta's orbit. But her temper isn't the only thing Cassian ignites. The fire between them is undeniable, and only burns hotter as they are forced into close quarters with each other.

Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.

Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance-and healing-in each other's arms.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Brilliant. Utterly brilliant. Amazing. Wow. Seriously. I could not put this book down and for so many amazing reasons. Nesta's journey was incredible. It was rough and raw and real and healing and just so many different things. Cassian's journey. The introduction of brilliant new characters and the the weaving of other plots that drew you in. There wasn't a moment in this book that didn't hook you in. I didn't think anything could top my love of Feyre and Rhysand's stories but this may have been my favorite of the series so far. It was that good. We know Nesta through the eyes of Feyre. Her anger and coldness and overall nastiness had us always pausing and wondering if there was anything to like about her. And at times, we all hated her. But, then we would get a real piece of her that would make us pause and realize there is more to Nesta than she always appears. Her front is a mask. And during ACOWAR we saw a more likable and fearsome Nesta, but then the war tore it all down. And ACOFAS showed us what happens when we descend to our lowest. A Court of Silver Flames is Nesta's healing journey. Simple as that. From the first page to the very last. We see her anger and rage and her emptiness and sorrow. How she pushes and pushes because her self-loathing and the nightmares and scars from the war have her believe that being alone is the best solution for everyone she has ever cared about. But her family isn't ready to give up on her. Cassian isn't ready to give up on her. And so it's a fight to spark her back to life. To help her help herself find a reason to live and heal. It was a beautiful story. And Nesta is such a powerful character. Being in her head and finally getting to see who she truly is was absolutely amazing. She became a favorite character.

So this story begins and follows Nesta as her family teams up to snap her out of her destructive behavior. She will be training with Cassian and working at the library with the priestesses. And for Nesta, it takes time for those two things to bring out the real her and spark her journey. There were so many great threads to this story too. On top of Nesta's healing journey, we are introduced to two characters who become Nesta's friends and sisters, Gwyn and Emerie. These two have their own horrible pasts and stories. And it binds them together. As friends and warriors. Our Valkyries. And then there is the threat of war from one of used to be mortal queens. That sparks a whole other thread which forces Nesta to face her power that she has tried so hard to push down. Then there are some amazing surprises in the Inner Circle. Which I refuse to spoil! This book had so much to offer.

And then of course there is the romance between Nesta and Cassian. It was everything Sarah J. Maas promised and more. For all those who wanted these two together, you get your wish and then some. Their relationship is complicated but the friendship they find with one another is great. And then it's really the finding their way back to one another after stumbling through the horrors of war. I couldn't get enough of these two from their banter to their amazing chemistry. The rawness when they dropped their masks and allowed themselves to be vulnerable was just so moving.

Great, great book. And like always with this series, I can't wait for more because there are so many things still left to explore. This series could be huge with the amount of threads and ideas woven in. I don't know who's book is next, but either way, I cannot wait.

Busy Bean Book 2: Cowboy by L.B. Dunbar

Cowboy
Busy Bean Book 2

Pregnant at forty-two? Back the cow up...

Harland Bull Eaton has lost many things—his first wife, his beloved mother, those three women he proposed to . . . Oh, and there was that time he almost lost the family dairy farm due to a scandal. He’s losing faith in just about everything, especially love.

But one night, his friends give him a dare. No commitments. No heartbreak. Just buy that gorgeous redhead a drink. The big-city bombshell he’s set his eyes on swirls him into a tailspin that lands them in bed for a one-night stand he’s pretty sure he’ll never forget. But this time, he swears, he won’t let his heart ride herd on his common sense.

Recently separated and newly unemployed, Scarlett Russell is at a crossroads. With no other plan than visiting a friend in Vermont, the last thing she expects is a hunky, silver fox offering to buy her a drink. Even less expected is when she raises that offer to “take me to bed, cowboy.” She just wants one night to forget everything gone wrong.

Turns out once won’t be nearly enough. Won’t ever be enough, feeling the way she does. But secrets and an unexpected surprise are a lot to handle . . . unless these two can break a trail to an unexpected happily ever after.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Scarlett wanted one night. One night to forget that her husband (or soon to be ex) cheated on her and that her job fired her because she was "too old". Bull wanted one night to just let go and stop looking for love. Because every time he thinks he has something great, something goes wrong. But turns out, one night will never be enough for Scarlett and Bull. Despite their insane chemistry, Scarlett and Bull go their separate ways. Bull thinks Scarlett was only there for a short visit, so surely it wasn't meant to be if she wasn't sticking around? But little does he know that Scarlett decides to stay in Vermont. For the first time in a long while, the place finally feels a little bit like home. And when their paths cross again, Scarlett realizes something else...she's pregnant. But is it her soon to be ex-husband's or Bull's? Turns out, it doesn't matter. Bull wants to be there for Scarlett and the baby. No matter what. As the two of them navigate what is surely a very complicated relationship, they start to fall in love. And with that love comes the fear of their past experiences. Bull thought he was in love before, but those times he was close to marriage, they fell apart. And Scarlett is just exiting a bad marriage, is rushing into another relationship the best idea? I loved reading their story. The banter between the two are hilarious. And you are cheering for them to take a leap of faith and admit their feelings. Another great addition to the World of True North. Dunbar introduces some great characters and brings back the familiar faces at the Busy Bean. Great story!

Jesus.  Did I mention the pressure thing? Am I crazy for starting something with her? Or would I be a fool for saying no?

Warning: this standalone novel contains heat, heart, familial expectations, extreme milkshakes, and a hamster with deep thoughts.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Such a great book to kick start this series! The Busy Beans series is another branch from the World of True North. And this book, Sweetheart by Sarah Mayberry was a great one to start it off. For those who have read Sarina Bowen's True North series, then you recognize the Busy Bean as Zara and Audrey's cafe. Plus you will recognize Roddy after reading Bowen's The Roommate. Plus a bunch of other familiar faces from that world. Mayberry does an amazing job of adding another member to the Busy Bean family when Haley is hired. Haley has quite a lot of experience in the cafe world and it is the perfect set up as she works on her side job which is an Etsy store for her custom made leather boots, belts, and so much more. Her artistic talent is one that blows everyone away. And just as she starts her new job, she finds herself in the path of Daniel Beck. AKA her sister's ex from years ago and by the expression on his face, he isn't too pleased to see her. And she can't blame him. She knows her sister is destructive, she could only imagine how their break up really ended. But what's worse is that she always had a crush on Beck and for him to look at her like that...well, it isn't great. However, it isn't long until something changes and they realize the chemistry and attraction between one another is unlike anything either felt before. And Haley begins to wonder if it is not too crazy to have a relationship with him. Beck is definitely confused at first when it comes to Haley. The opposite of her sister in every way and though he promises himself to stay clear of that family, there is something about Haley that just draws him in. And he soon learns that Haley might be just the one he was looking for all along. Loved their story so much. Their relationship has so many complications but despite those challenges, the chemistry between Haley and Beck is undeniable. You were rooting for them to find their happily ever after, especially with everything the two of them have been through. Great start to this series and I cannot wait for more!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Not gonna lie, I was worried when I started this book because of all that had happened in the previous book. But! This book was an excellent way to end the series. I was pretty satisfied with everything that had gone down. So, in this finale Emberfall is slowly falling. The people are losing faith in Rhen and Rhen is struggling on what to do. And if that wasn't enough, Lilith is back and the tormenting has only gotten worse. Harper is still angry about the decisions Rhen has recently made, but the two of them finally talk and are honest. Now with everything on the table, they can figure out a plan. Together. Lia Mara and Grey are struggling to gain the trust of Syhl Shallow's army and advisors. They still want peace and hope that Rhen will yield to peace. But they have to be prepared if in the end war is the only choice. And when Rhen and Harper make a decision that can finally lead to peace, Lilith takes a drastic measure. Little does she know, her actions may be just what everyone needs to work together. What I loved about this book was the growth with Rhen. And even Harper. A lot has happened to them and yet throughout this story they find a way back to one another and to work together. And with all the choices Rhen made, he finally gets to redeem himself and try to face his fears that Lilith caused. Then there is Grey, who has to make a decision on his feelings towards Rhen, his brother. The story was definitely open ended. Some issues still left unsolved, but there is definitely a start to healing for all these great characters. I loved this book. And couldn't put it down. And if there are more books coming out for this series,  I would definitely read them!
