Shifters Unbound Book 11: Midnight Wolf by Jennifer Ashley

Midnight Wolf (Shifters Unbound, #11)
Shifters Unbound Book 11
The eleventh novel in the New York Times bestselling paranormal romance series, Shifters Unbound.

Angus Murray, bouncer for a New Orleans Shifter bar, is sent to round up an elusive, Collar-less Shifter woman, Tamsin Calloway, who is causing trouble for Shifter Bureau, and possesses information they want. If Angus refuses, he risks losing his cub. He finds Tamsin but she's slippery and not about to be rounded up quietly.

In fact, quiet is nothing Tamsin will ever be. She leads Angus on a wild chase, but he's determined to bring her in to save his son.

Can Tamsin convince Angus she's worth helping before she's locked away by Shifter Bureau, Collared, or perhaps killed?

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Book 11 of the Shifter Universe, though technically if you count the novellas it's more like 21, is still a great series and no matter how many books they just keep getting better and a lot more interesting as they continue! Our main couple here is Angus and Tamsin. Angus was introduced in the previous book Red Wolf, and it was awesome to have him back and introduce us to Tamsin, who is a pretty awesome female character! And a unique one at that! Their worlds collide when the Shifters Bureau force Angus to track her down by kidnapping his cub. And though Angus hates the Bureau, he will do anything for his son. When he meets Tamsin, he knows there is more going on than the Bureau led him to believe. And after meeting her he struggles to hand her over. Though when the time comes, he tells her that as soon as he has his son back, she will escape and he will help.

Their plan goes somewhat as planned, but in the chaos, Angus and his son run with Tamsin. Familiar faces appear like Ben, Zander, Jaycee, Dmitri, and of course Tiger along with some new characters who make their journey a lot more interesting. They keep on the move and learn to hide in plain sight, as they figure out what to do next. Plus there is something Tamsin is hiding, that is the real reason the Bureau is after her. The story was a great read. We got to see what has been going on with the Shifters more and are introduced to Tamsin's unique shifting ability. Plus, watching Angus and Tamsin fall in love and become a family was beautifully written. Especially with their opposite personalities. Though I guess even for Shifters, opposites do attract!

Great story. Super excited for the next one, which is a novella about Tiger. A favorite character of mine, any story with him is always great.

Pandava Quartet Book 1: Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi

Aru Shah and the End of Time (Pandava Quartet, #1)
Pandava Quartet Book 1
Twelve-year-old Aru Shah has a tendency to stretch the truth in order to fit in at school. While her classmates are jetting off to family vacations in exotic locales, she'll be spending her autumn break at home, in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture, waiting for her mom to return from her latest archeological trip. Is it any wonder that Aru makes up stories about being royalty, traveling to Paris, and having a chauffeur?

One day, three schoolmates show up at Aru's doorstep to catch her in a lie. They don't believe her claim that the museum's Lamp of Bharata is cursed, and they dare Aru to prove it. Just a quick light, Aru thinks. Then she can get herself out of this mess and never ever fib again.

But lighting the lamp has dire consequences. She unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon whose duty it is to awaken the God of Destruction. Her classmates and beloved mother are frozen in time, and it's up to Aru to save them.

The only way to stop the demon is to find the reincarnations of the five legendary Pandava brothers, protagonists of the Hindu epic poem, the Mahabharata, and journey through the Kingdom of Death. But how is one girl in Spider-Man pajamas supposed to do all that?

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Surprisingly I haven't read any of Roshani Chokshi's books yet. And you would think I would have  by now since she has some popular ones in young adult, which is a majority of what I read. However! What made me pick up this young adult/middle school book was Rick Riordan. Riordan has established an imprint at Disney Publishing called Rick Riordan Presents. And anything that has his name grabbed my attention. I loved all of his books and no matter how old I get, that won't change. So to me, if he is creating an imprint that focuses on mythology, I am so there. And it doesn't disappoint.

The first in his imprint is Aru Shah and the End of Time. And Roshani Chokshi is a very talented author. I know a lot of different mythologies but when it comes to Hindu mythology I know none. Well that changed. Not only is the book filled with Hindu mythology it is told in a way that made Rick Riordan's books so successful as well. The story was fun, entertaining, adventurous, and had a cast of characters that you will absolutely love! And though it is technically made for a younger audience, any one can read them and still enjoy them.

Our main heroines (you'll get the emphasis later when you read!) are Aru and Minnie. As Pandavas, it is up to them to stop the demon, Sleeper. As they embark on their journey, they learn more about themselves and about the evil they face as they travel through the Kingdom of Death. Great story and I learned it is the first of four! So I am very excited to see where it goes and to learn a lot more about Hindu mythology.

The Fates Divide by Veronica Roth

The Fates Divide (Carve the Mark, #2)
Sequel to Carve the Mark
Fate brought them together. Now it will divide them.

The lives of Cyra Noavek and Akos Kereseth are ruled by their fates, spoken by the oracles at their births. The fates, once determined, are inescapable.

Akos is in love with Cyra, in spite of his fate: He will die in service to Cyra’s family. And when Cyra’s father, Lazmet Noavek—a soulless tyrant, thought to be dead—reclaims the Shotet throne, Akos believes his end is closer than ever.

As Lazmet ignites a barbaric war, Cyra and Akos are desperate to stop him at any cost. For Cyra, that could mean taking the life of the man who may—or may not—be her father. For Akos, it could mean giving his own. In a stunning twist, the two will discover how fate defines their lives in ways most unexpected.

With the addition of two powerful new voices, Veronica Roth's sequel to Carve the Mark is a chorus of hope, humor, faith, and resilience.

My Review: 4/5 Stars

I read Carve the Mark last year when it was released, so when The Fates Divide came out this week, I'll admit it took a little bit to get back into the story.  Remembering the characters and what had happened in the previous book. But luckily, it did come crashing back to me. And like the first book this was great as well! (Though I will admit I was a bit nervous reading this book, because with Ross's work you never know what will happen. And when I say her work, I mean Divergent. Cause we all know how that ended.) Anyway! Fates Divide was actually pretty awesome.

I enjoyed this sequel a bit more than the first one. Especially that it had a ton of plot twists that made it super interesting and that I didn't see coming. Cyra and Akos struggle to figure out who they are and how to bring peace in a war coming that will only bring endless destruction. And it doesn't help when they have oracles telling or not telling them information that could help or cause more chaos. Akos especially struggles when it comes to the definition of fate. Is it something he has control of or is it truly too late to change any of it? Watching Cyra and Akos try to figure out what they want from their lives and their destinies is pretty intense and only gets more interesting when a big secret is revealed to them that changes everything.

If you enjoyed Carved the Mark you will definitely enjoy The Fates Divide. It was a truly interesting story with a satisfying ending.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Amazing. Awesome. Loved, loved, loved it! Didn't realize how badly I wanted to read Assail's and Sola's story until I actually picked it up and started. I wanted their story, especially that we knew Assail was going through some pretty intense stuff, so I was ready for him to get some happiness and it was so worth the wait! Plus there was a ton more introduced in this book that made The Thief absolutely awesome in my eyes. Not only did we get to see a reunion of Sola and Assail, we got to see Vishous and Jane find their way back to one another, after seriously watching them for the last couple of books drift apart and lose themselves. And we also go more information of Throe and the beginning of his new evil plans and last but not least, we finally get our first real (and I mean real!) look at Murhder. Not much, but enough to let us know that he is finally coming into play.

Okay! So my breakdown. Like I said the book focuses on our main couple Assail and Sola. And to see Sola bring him back from almost the dead was heartwarming and had me rooting for them to finally get together. But the real problem isn't that they don't love another or are afraid to say it, it's the fact that Assail hasn't told her what he is. And that is eating him alive with guilt because he wants to be honest but one, it's not allowed and two, he knows when he tells her she will most likely leave.

Meanwhile, Vishous and Jane are not doing too hot. Both have become so distant from one another. Jane is consumed with work and she barely has time to look at her mate. Meanwhile, Vishous has realized that there is this gap between them and has no idea what to do. Neither have ever been good at relationships and they are once more being tested. After a near disaster that threatens their relationship, they both get a serious wake up call. But there is hope! They finally talk (and yell) and face reality. This gives them the push they need to get their relationship back on track and actually be happy. It's a rough start, but I agree with Ward when she has said that we would fall in love with V and Jane all over again. It's true.

And while all this is happening, Throe has created some shadow creatures that are causing some serious havoc. The Brothers are desperate to figure out a way to stop it and they continue to wonder who the Scribe Virgin has appointed. (And yes, someone finally figures it out! Though not until the real end and if they don't start talking about it in the next book I am going to scream!!) So, so much in this book. I am super pumped for the next one. Which I have no idea who will it be about. Maybe Murhder? Ward had once mentioned that Murhder and Lassiter were getting their own books one day, but is it their time? I think more has to come before Lassiter's, but with Murhder reappearing in the Brothers' lives, maybe it is him? Or someone else. Either way I am pumped! Great series and The Thief was a great addition.

Ghosts of the Shadow Market Book 1: Son of the Dawn by Cassandra Clare & Sarah Rees Brennan

Son of the Dawn (Ghosts of the Shadow Market, #1)
Ghosts of the Shadow Market Book 1

The Lightwoods, the Shadowhunters who run the New York Institute, are expecting a new addition to their family: the orphaned son of their father's friend, Jace Wayland. Alec and Isabelle aren't too sure they want a new brother, and their parents are not assuaging their fears, too occupied with the dark news that Raphael Santiago, second-in-command of the New York vampire clan, has brought from the Shadow Market.

********

My Review: 5/5 Stars

The first novella of the Ghosts of the Shadow Market collection and it was amazing! I am never disappointed when it comes to Cassandra Clare. I love that the stories will follow Jem Carstairs, because he is one of my favorite characters from this world Clare has created. To see him when he is still Brother Zachariah is such a treat. We finally get to see different parts of his life after the Infernal Devices. So! For this first book, Son of the Dawn, we get to see young vampires Raphael and Lily come forward to Jem in need of his help. Meanwhile, Jace is on his way to meet the Lightwoods for the first time. Jem encourages Raphael to seek the Lightwoods to begin bridging the gap between the Downworld and the Shadowhunters. Raphael may not trust them because those before them at the New York Institute weren't good leaders, but this is a first step to establishing a relationship. They also meet Jace for the first time. Jace already has amazing fighting skills and though he is unsure of how to really act with other people, his sense of humor still shines through. We also get to see a young Alec, Isabelle, and Max. Their first meetings are exactly what first meetings are awkward but beneath that, you can see Jace is tempted to have a sense of family and Alec and the Lightwoods are willing to be that. Jem is also given a chance to remember and think of Will as he watches Jace be thrown in a situation that similar to his own. And hopes that he will find a friend like Will, when Jem had needed him most. Jem is reminded of his old life and that they are the reason he has to always remember. A great first story and I am looking forward to more!

Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

Starry Eyes

Ever since last year’s homecoming dance, best friends-turned-best enemies Zorie and Lennon have made an art of avoiding each other. It doesn’t hurt that their families are the modern day, Californian version of the Montagues and Capulets.

But when a group camping trip goes south, Zorie and Lennon find themselves stranded in the wilderness. Alone. Together.

What could go wrong?

With no one but each other for company, Zorie and Lennon have no choice but to hash out their issues via witty jabs and insults as they try to make their way to safety. But fighting each other while also fighting off the forces of nature makes getting out of the woods in one piece less and less likely.

And as the two travel deeper into Northern California’s rugged backcountry, secrets and hidden feelings surface. But can Zorie and Lennon’s rekindled connection survive out in the real world? Or was it just a result of the fresh forest air and the magic of the twinkling stars?

********
My Review: 5/5 Stars

SO FREAKING GOOD! Seriously Jenn Bennett is an awesome writer. The first book I read by her was Alex, Approximately and I fell so in love with her writing and her characters. And was super excited to read Starry Eyes and it was so worth the wait! The storyline was awesome, the characters even more, and set in California in the woods that made me want to stop stalling and pick up my backpack and finally go camping was a seriously strong feeling. As soon as spring makes an appearance I am so there!

Starry Eyes follows the story of Zorie and Lennon. Our nerdy astrophysicist with a bit of an anxiety and control problems and the let's dress in black all the time, read graphic novels, and a secret outdoors expert, are our couple who you will be cheering for the entire book! Because how can they not be together? Bennett touches upon so many relatable and very real issues. How one miscommunication to lack of communication can lead to a earth shattering change. To how we all have anxiety, yet sometimes there are those who have it as proof on their skin. And how we lose our loved ones to tragedy or just plain stupidity.

Zorie and Lennon are thrown on a camping trip with those who aren't really their friends. After an epic drama filled argument, their "friends" leave them stranded in the woods. Instead of letting the jerks win, they decide that they are going to hike the woods, climb some mountains, and make it to the Star Party to see a meteor shower. On their adventure, they finally let out all the hurt and mixed feelings and confusion that they have faced since ignoring one another almost a year before. Truths are revealed and they slowly find their way back to one another. Though there is plenty, especially at home, threatening to keep them apart.

What I loved about this book was that it wasn't predictable. There were so many twists and turns, that it kept you on your toes. When you think you figured one thing out, another secret is revealed and you wonder what will happen next. Their banter is witty and hilarious to follow. And their connection is their own sparkling star in the night. If you love Jenn Benntt's writing, you will love this story. And if you have never read her before, I seriously recommend it! Great, great story.

My Review: 4/5 Stars

Surprise! The book is released earlier than the original publishing date, so thank you Leia Stone for that treat! I really enjoyed the final book of this series and was super excited to see in the acknowledgements that Leia may be continuing the series and asked if us fans would be in interested. And to that I say absolutely!

The book picked up right where the last one ended. There was a lot of action and humor that kept the story interesting, especially when it threw in some new faces and mythological creatures. The series to me is my fluff reading where I get the happily ever after I wanted and all things that interest me, the romance, the magic, the action, the plot twists and myths. Though the book was short, I liked where it took the story and like I said earlier I would be interested in diving deeper into it.
