A Dark-Hunter Novel Book 27: Stygian by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Stygian (Dark-Hunter, #29)
A Dark-Hunter Novel Book 27
-MAJOR SPOILER WARNING-
While the books don’t have to be read in order, if you haven’t read Dragonsworn, this synopsis will contain massive spoilers for DS. We just wanted to warn you!
-MAJOR SPOILER WARNING-

Born before man recorded time, I lived for thousands of years, believing myself to be something I’m not.
Someone I’m not.
Lied to and betrayed by gods, Daimons, and Dark-Hunters, I’ve struggled to find my way in a world where I’ve been cursed since the moment a vengeful goddess prematurely ripped me from my mother and planted me into the womb of an innocent woman who thought me her son.
Trained as a slayer and predator, I’ve learned to fit in and stay low. To become a tool for evil. Until I was sent to kill the one woman I couldn’t. My hesitation cost her, her life.
Or so I thought. In an act of betrayal that makes all the others pale in comparison, I’ve learned that things are not what they seem in this world and that my Phoebe still lives.
Now I will have to travel into the very pits of Hades to try and save her, even as everyone around me attempts to steal what little soul I have left. There’s only one person at my back and I’m not sure I can trust her either, for she was born of an enemy race. Yet sometimes the road to redemption is one that singes us to our very core. And if I fail to find the answers I need to save Phoebe, more than just my wife will die.
We will lose the world. Both human and Daimon.
~Urian of the House of Aricles

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Such a fantastic book! Definitely one of my favorites of the series. We've been waiting a long time to get Urian's book. And one that I realized while reading it was that you don't know Urian as well as you may think you do. Urian has been in the series since pretty early on. He has appeared countless times. We've seen him at some of his lowest and highest moments. We've seen him learn the truth of who he is. But when I started Stygian and it took us to the days of his childhood, I realized we know absolutely nothing about him. Not really. His life before we meet him in Kiss of the Night, was a lot different.  We finally see what he was like with his siblings and with Stryker as his father. We see how he became who is he. His story was both heartbreaking and beautiful. Urian is such a stronger character. One who had was set apart from his family and never really understood why. His journey was one that went over 11,000 years and every moment he fought to be a protector of those he loved. And despite what life threw at him, no matter how horrible, he got back up.

And sorry, some spoilers if you haven't read the series, but seriously you should not start this book until you have read everything before it!! I was worried about how Phoebe and Sarraxyn would play into his life. I knew from previous hints from the author that Urian's love interest would by Xyn, but with the surprise of Phoebe appearing, I didn't understand how that would make sense. How could Urian love someone else only after a handful of years after Phoebe's so called death? From the Urian we had seen, he was devoted to only Phoebe. For those, who are worried about all of this going to be messy and poorly written and explained, let me tell you Kenyon does not let you down. She tells the story so well that I wasn't left saying, "well that makes no sense" or "that was so rushed!" Nope. Not at all. I appreciated how she went about it. Turns out (and again spoiler!!), Urian and Xyn had met before. In the very first few years of his existence. And their friendship and eventual love is show throughout his life up until the moment she disappears. Which if you have read Dragonsworn we know what happened to her. And though she isn't mentioned out loud by Urian, he is constantly in his thoughts. And as for Phoebe and Urian's relationship, we finally get a good look at them from their point of view. And again, I was happy with what I saw and how it was handled after Phoebe's "death".

Urian's story was one I waited for and I was truly not disappointed. I loved learning about his past. I loved re-reading some important moments where he appeared in the series. And I absolutely loved when we caught up to the previous book and the new story that occurred. Especially any moment where Styxx and Bethany become super protective of their eldest child. They are two of my favorite characters and to finally see them happy and with their family is so satisfying!! And that ending!! Wow!! Things have changed in the Dark-Hunter world and I cannot wait to find out what happens next! With that tiny cliffhanger, things are definitely going to get interesting. Seriously cannot wait for the next book. If we follow the epilogue I may have an idea who's story is next, but then again, you truly never know.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

A fantastic ending to an amazing series. Seriously, what a way to end the series. After 10 long books and a few novellas, the Kate Daniels series has come to an end. And what an ending it was! I laughed and I cried and I probably had ten more emotions as I was reading the book. Demanding to know why certain things happened, but being relieved to see the answers. To laughing my butt off thanks to Kate and Curran's banter, and Hugh's for that matter as well. Smiling at moments you have waited patiently for. It was just such a satisfying book knowing it was the end for our main characters Kate and Curran.

Kate has fought her family, her friends, the love of her life, and their baby son. She fought to make a life for herself after believing for so long that she wasn't going to get one. She knows that with the birth of her son, her father will be there ready to take him away from her and Curran. A war is coming and she is ready to fight for everyone she loves, even if it means her own death.

The book starts with the birth of Kate and Curran's son, Conlan. Then it jumps to thirteen months later. They've adjusted to a life with a child and though Conlan has turned their life upside down, Atlanta is still causing trouble and they are still protecting it. When a surprising (and horrifying) incident occurs, everything changes. And the cause isn't Kate's father, Roland. No. It is something that is a lot worse. A new threat has come and now it will take everyone in Atlanta to fight it. Everyone. As Kate and her friends figure out how to defeat this new enemy, they are also preparing for the moment when Roland will come for them. Battles on all sides. Familiar and surprising faces return.

Plot twists on plot twists occurred throughout this book and I loved every moment of it. I couldn't guess what was coming. I kept turning page after page, demanding to know how everything will be resolved. And it was. That's what I really loved. And though the ending left things with the hope of new stories for others and of course, wanting more of Hugh and Elara (2 more books with them! yay!), I was still happy and content with the ending. If you love this series and you have stuck with it to the very end, you will love this final book. I know I did.

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

Sea Witch

Everyone knows what happens in the end. A mermaid, a prince, a true love’s kiss. But before that young siren’s tale, there were three friends. One feared, one royal, and one already dead.

Ever since her best friend, Anna, drowned, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. A freak. A curse. A witch.

A girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears offshore and, though the girl denies it, Evie is convinced that her best friend actually survived. That her own magic wasn’t so powerless after all. And, as the two girls catch the eyes—and hearts—of two charming princes, Evie believes that she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after.

But her new friend has secrets of her own. She can’t stay in Havnestad, or on two legs, unless Evie finds a way to help her. Now Evie will do anything to save her friend’s humanity, along with her prince’s heart—harnessing the power of her magic, her ocean, and her love until she discovers, too late, the truth of her bargain.

My Review: 3/5 Stars

A Little Mermaid retelling with a couple of twists. I was excited to read this when I heard about it. I figured witches, mermaids, sea witches, this has got to be interesting. And it was. Yet at the same time, I was a bit disappointed. The beginning of the story felt pretty slow. I was trudged through hoping it would get better and it honestly didn't until the middle end of the book. If you are familiar with the story The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, then you will recognize several parallels. Which again, I thought was cool and exciting, and this story did have some twists that made the book interesting, but at the same time the character development and the plot brought it down. Though the story was called Sea Witch, I weirdly didn't think about this possibly being an origin story for her. By the end of the book that was what I realized and what I found super intriguing. Not my favorite mermaid story, but if you want something a bit different and love Hans Christian Andersen's original story, then you should definitely read this book.

Sequel series to the Remnant Chronicles, book 1: Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson

Dance of Thieves (Dance of Thieves, #1)
Dance of Thieves Book 1
A new novel in the New York Times–bestselling Remnant Chronicles universe, in which a reformed thief and the young leader of an outlaw dynasty lock wits in a battle that may cost them their lives—and their hearts.

When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes its new leader. Even nearby kingdoms bow to the strength of this outlaw family, who have always governed by their own rules. But a new era looms on the horizon, set in motion by a young queen, which makes her the target of the dynasty's resentment and anger.

At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements. When Kazi arrives in the forbidding land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase than she thought. As unexpected events spiral out of their control, bringing them intimately together, they continue to play a cat and mouse game of false moves and motives in order to fulfill their own secret missions.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

I'll admit that it took me a little bit to get into the book. The beginning was pretty slow for me. But I also think that was because I should have re-read the Remnant Chronicles  before going into this book. Though you could technically read it on its own, I highly recommend you don't!! This book takes place 6 years later and we get some throwback characters. Plus, you'll know all about the world you are reading. That was my problem. It had been so long since I read the series, it took me a while to remember all the places and the world Mary E. Pearson created. We are introduced to a new place, which had to be a favorite of mine, and to be honest a whole load of characters were introduced that by the end of the book I absolutely loved! So read the Remnant Chronicles before this book! You will not be disappointed!

My thoughts kept drifting to 2 words as I read this book: truth and lies. When it comes to her characters, Pearson is really good at hiding truths from the reader. You spend basically the entire book trying to figure out who is telling the truth, who is lying, who is holding back information. It's super interesting. Then there is the fact that for this story our main characters Kazi and Jase have their inner walls built so strong that you know you are missing pieces of their stories. And if they were completely honest with one another for even a moment or two, then a lot of things could have been avoided! But, then it wouldn't be much of a story, huh? Though it took me a bit to get into the book like I said earlier, once you hit a point it's a fantastic read. I was nervous near the end and how this book would play out, but I wasn't disappointed. (Especially when certain somebodies made an appearance!) And though this book did leave us with a bit of a cliffhanger, which of course will leave me desperately wanting the next book though it will be a year until I receive it, it was just a really awesome book.

Kazi is sent by the Queen of Venda (aka Lia who was our main character in the previous series) on a mission to find someone. Her and her crew believe that this person is hiding in the Ballenger empire. Where Jase has just been made leader of that empire. When Kazi and Jase are thrown into certain circumstances, they find themselves forgetting they are enemies and their feelings start to grow for one another. And when they return to Tor's Watch, both know they are keeping secrets and that they can't promise a future, even if they both want one together. It's a game of truth and lies. And discovering who is the real enemy to them.

Awesome book. Highly recommend!

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Finally a Jem and Tessa story! And it was of course both beautiful and a tad heartbreaking but even better it was hopeful. As bombs are dropped in London Tessa and Catarina become nurses to help others during this war. Helping others is the only way Tessa can cope with losing Will. Her grief is still fresh even though it has been 3 years. But with a love like that, it is expected. Meanwhile, Jem is continuing his search for the Lost Herondale. When Jem is gravelly injured he immediately finds his way to Tessa. Tess and Catarina do whatever they can to save him. Battling for Jem's life, Tessa realizes that she could lose Jem just as she lost Will. Their meeting gives her hope for the future once more. A future where they find a cure for him and he doesn't have to be a Silent Brother no longer, a future where they could be together. They know the chances are slim, but holding onto hope and onto one another is what keeps Tessa from falling in her grief and from Jem losing his humanity. A short story but definitely a favorite. And more answers are revealed that get us closer to following the story of the Lost Herondale and the journey that will one day bring us to Kit.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Oh my God!!!! This cannot be a done series. No freaking way! First off, one of my favorites series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. And I was ecstatic when I heard that there would be a follow up novella, but after that cliffhanger ending, no one can tell me that is the end of this series! So good!! Okay, so what happened? Without spoilers of course. The book starts not too long after the third book Brave ended. The Queen is gone and everyone is beginning to heal. However, there is still one tragedy left and everything changes for Brighton. Two years later and Brighton isn't who she used to be. She's a survivor and furthermore she is a hunter, not that the Order knows that. She's set on revenge and her path comes someone...surprising. The Prince, aka Caden, has his own plans of revenge after the spell that made me a slave. And when younglings of the Summer Court are missing, Brighton and Caden find themselves working together on both goals. But neither expected the spark between them. They both know nothing can happen, but that will that be enough?

Really loved the story. The story is told through Brighton's point of view and though she was in the earlier books, getting her thoughts and learning about who she is was such a treat. And through her we get a look at Caden who for so long was seen as a villain because of the spell that enslaved him. New enemies and conflicts arise, and though I haven't heard anything about the series continuing, I have to believe there will be more. Love this series.

DC Icons Book 3: Catwoman: Soulstealer by Sarah J. Maas

Catwoman: Soulstealer (DC Icons, #3)
 DC Icons Book 3

Two years after escaping Gotham City's slums, Selina Kyle returns as the mysterious and wealthy Holly Vanderhees. She quickly discovers that with Batman off on a vital mission, Batwing is left to hold back the tide of notorious criminals. Gotham City is ripe for the taking.

Meanwhile, Luke Fox wants to prove he has what it takes to help people in his role as Batwing. He targets a new thief on the prowl who seems cleverer than most. She has teamed up with Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, and together they are wreaking havoc. This Catwoman may be Batwing's undoing.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

This DC Icons series is seriously kick ass. Makes me sad to think there is only one more after this one, because there should seriously be way more. There are plenty of DC characters left, someone make it happen! So Sarah J. Maas did an amazing job on Selina Kyle aka Catwoman and the story behind her. Different from any interpretation that I have seen, I absolutely loved this book beginning to end. We see a new side to the famous Catwoman and we don't just get her. We other villains like Harley Quinn, Poison  Ivy, and the famous League of Assassins, including Nyssa and Talia al Ghul. And as for the heroes, we get Batwing!!!! Also known as Luke Fox. Which I thought was such a fun twist. Though Batman/Bruce was mentioned, this story really was about Selina and Luke. But more importantly, Selina. The story begins with Selina when she is part of the Leopard gang. She has one responsibility and it is to take care of her sister who is the only one she truly loves and her only family and who happens to be very sick. Selina does whatever she has to do to keep her sister as healthy as she can. If that means participating in underground fights held by crime boss Carmine Falcone, then she will. Until the day comes where the police and social services arrive at her doorstep. Separated from her sister, Talia al Ghul arrives at the station and offers Selina a deal. Leave everyone and everything and come with Talia and she won't go to jail. Selina has her own deal, make sure her sister is cared and provided for and she will go no questions asked. The deal is set and Selina is whisked away to the League of Assassins.

Two years later, Selina has returned to Gotham City under a new name and a new mission. She causes a little, sorry a lot of havoc in Gotham City during the night, stealing from the rich, teaming up with Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, and bantering with Batwing. While during the day, she pulls on her mask of Holly Vanderhees and tries not to fall for neighbor Luke. Meanwhile, while Batman is away, Luke is the only one holding Gotham's defenses against the chaos the criminals are causing. And with the arrival of Catwoman and the League of Assassins who are coming after her, his job becomes that much harder. Plus it doesn't help that he is attracted to both his new neighbor Holly and the criminal, Catwoman. I loved getting Luke's point of view in the story and what led him to become Batwing. Also, his chemistry with Selina was fantastic to read.

What was awesome about this story was that it wasn't predictable. You may think you know Catwoman and even Batwing, but truth is in this version, you truly don't. Their masks are too good. And I loved that. I loved not being able to really predict what she was doing and what her plans were. Just when you think you have it figured out, she throws a curveball. Is she a villain, is she a hero? Maybe she is a bit of both. She is such an interesting and intriguing character and Sarah J. Maas was the perfect writer to tell her story. Highly recommend! Probably the best out of the DC Icon series.

Or, will duty trump all, including the life of one of them?

*********

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Loved Kalahn and Ryven's story! Definitely my favorite from the series so far. I always wondered if there would be something between Kalahn and Ryven way back in book one when we met them, and I was super glad that it happened! Their story takes place shortly after the last book. Kalahn learned that she had more family and is determined to connect with her half-sister that is currently residing on Jasvar with herself and her brother Kason. However, their meeting comes with the dangers of an assassin threatening the royal family. Kalahn is finally given a chance to be more than the helpless princess she is expected to be. She will do whatever it takes to protect her family and that is tested throughout the story. Ryven is assigned to protect Kalahn and her sister, as well as train Kalahn to protect herself. Their chemistry and attraction to one another is something they try to fight but that is a battle neither one want to really win.

This story also revealed some pretty awesome abilities in their race that makes the story become even more interesting. I really don't want to spoil anything because it is pretty awesome. Their "unseen connection" is a cool twist to the story that is explored very well and i hope is something we get more in the future with other characters. Another thing i would like to see in the future the sister Kalahn meets, Kajala. I believe there is another story there and I really hope it is one we get to see!

I received an ARC for an honest review.

THE CHASE
(Briar U, Book 1)

Everyone says opposites attract. And they must be right, because there’s no logical reason why I’m so drawn to Colin Fitzgerald. I don’t usually go for tattoo-covered, video-gaming, hockey-playing nerd-jocks who think I’m flighty and superficial. His narrow view of me is the first strike against him. It doesn’t help that he’s buddy-buddy with my brother.
And that his best friend has a crush on me.
And that I just moved in with them.
Oh, did I not mention we’re roommates?
I suppose it doesn’t matter. Fitzy has made it clear he’s not interested in me, even though the sparks between us are liable to burn our house down. I’m not the kind of girl who chases after a man, though, and I’m not about to start. I’ve got my hands full dealing with a new school, a sleazy professor, and an uncertain future. So if my sexy brooding roomie wises up and realizes what he’s missing?
He knows where to find me.
